Mia McCann Earns Prestigious Invite
Bartow resident Mia McCann is only 15, but her golf resume is already quite impressive.
The First-Tee of Lakeland has reason to be proud. McCann was selected to attend the Joe Louis Barrow Life Skills and Leadership Academy held on the campus of Michigan State University in Lansing.
More than 90 golfers from across the country, including McCann, descended on the campus last week to participate in the Academy. During the week, McCann was able to learn and interact with top coaches, while also working on her game. A rising sophomore at Summerlin Academy in Bartow, McCann was the second member of her family to earn an invite to the camp, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Markie.
“It tickled me to death for her to be able to go,” says Mia and Markie’s mother, Roxanne McCann. “I knew how hard she worked (to be able to go) and how hard she’s worked at golf. It makes me proud to see everything she’s done. ”
“My golf game is rapidly improving, as I’ve been taking it seriously for about two years now,” says Mia McCann. “Finding out I was accepted into the camp was shocking at first. I couldn’t believe that they picked me. When I first got there, I was pretty nervous.”
“We are thrilled to have one of our participants from our chapter chosen,” said First Tee Executive Director Gerald Richardson. “Mia began participating in our chapter when she was 10 and it has been a delight to see her grow into the young lady she has become.”
“The camp was great,” says Mia. “I learned so much. We did a lot of team bonding and did a lot of new kinds of golf games that I am looking forward to bringing back to Lakeland.”_______________________________________________________________________________________________
